Listening Beyond Words: The Path to Genuine Communication

Introduction

Communication is a vital part of any relationship, however, there are certain factors that we don’t pay attention to, we take words at face value, but more times than not, words are not what they seem. A lot of times people say something and more often than we think, it means something different, and this results in misunderstandings that could have been avoided.

In the grand scheme of things

If one were to say, “Beware of your friends”. A confrontational person (regardless of the intent) would find it offensive, a patient person, on the other hand, is generally more understanding, but there is a grey area where emotions attached to reasoning and reactions are often overlooked, highlighting the importance of understanding the history behind emotions in interactions.

More times than not there are emotions attached to reactions, a history behind the emotions, highlighting the importance of understanding the history behind emotions in interactions. It is important to choose your words wisely before speaking because the words you choose determine the potential outcome of that conversation and most importantly make sure the context of what you say is very clear to avoid being misinterpreted intentionally or unintentionally.

The art of articulation

Being articulate with your words is a great skill to have, especially if you’re trying to have a productive conversation, this skill gives you the unique advantage of being able to know when you should withdraw yourself from a conversation, the key is communicating clearly so that if the response is not appropriate for the goal of the conversation, you can stop it.

Reading into words

Some people speak from a place of hurt, their responses are sometimes bitter and angry and sometimes they respond like people who have learnt from their hurt and are humbled. Some people respond positively all the time, their responses are sometimes from a place of courage and hope, and sometimes it’s their way of hiding the demons they fight.

Conclusion

It is important to carefully listen before you respond, it is important to know what you are responding to before you respond, and you have to hear where the words are coming from, not just how the words are put together, that’s how you improve your communication skills and avoid having unproductive conversations like it was stated in the beginning, there’s more to words than what meets the eye.
