FINDING YOUR PATH AFTER SCHOOL: HOW TO TACKLE THE TRANSITION PHASE

INTRODUCTION

The period of transition between when one completes school and that during which one is looking for a job is often overlooked. It can be an extremely sensitive period as more often than not, confusion sets in and tends to affect both one’s mental state and life choices in general.

Here are some ways through which this period can be effectively managed.

INDIVIDUALITY

One has to remember the importance of individuality: what makes you, who you are ? If you weren’t aiming at a job, career, specialization, or academic prowess, who would you be? We tend to get so busy that we forget to be people rather than elements or tools for a “greater” objective in life.

HOBBIES

Remember, hobbies are part of life; what are you good at? What do you genuinely enjoy doing? Explore your artistic, non-conventional activity-seeking side. Are you good at photography, do you enjoy cooking, painting, writing, singing, dancing, and makeup? What fires up your soul? Take time and figure out what these are and when it’s done, indulge in them.

KNOWLEDGE REINFORCEMENT

Actively look for learning opportunities to reinforce what you already know or what you have been taught in school; look up short course certifications, they’re all over the internet. Find the ones that are very specific to your field and from there, try your best to develop that skill. The reason is that this period will come to an end eventually. Stay ready, so you don’t have to get ready.

QUALITY TIME

Spend time with loved ones. Most of them may be busier than you would be/are during the said period, but when you can, as a group, set up activities that will solidify your bond. You might never again have this much time to spend with your loved ones, take advantage of it.

WISE CHOICES

Do not be desperate for opportunities but also, be aware that you’re not going to get it all from the start. There’s a thin line between being conscious of one’s potential and being too demanding, and this can get very tricky to define but well, guess what? You have plenty of time to figure that out.

Ask questions, seek advice from more experienced people, and read about the opportunities in your field such that when the time comes you know exactly what you’re worth and what is expected from you.

CONCLUSION

This might come as a bonus point, but do not let intrusive thoughts, comparison, and despair do away with your joy and self-esteem. Remember this period is a transition, it might be harder on you than it is on someone else but that doesn’t make you less of a human. Things will eventually fall into place and if they don’t, trust yourself enough to know that you can handle everything that may come your way.

Be kinder to yourself.
