SOTRAMA: Discovering a public means of transportation

Introduction

Sotrama is one of the busiest public transport systems in Mali, more precisely in Bamako. With this expensive, fast means of transport, SOTRAMA also generates a lot of business. Namely, we learn a lot from each other, we educate, and we get updated about current news…

In recent years, transport costs have continued to increase. From 60 FCFA, it now rises to 250 FCFA with the rise in the price of gasoline. The Sotrama apprentices commonly called “Prantikai” are also a separate story.

Misunderstanding between apprentices and passengers

Most of them don’t get along with passengers because of their bad behaviour. Likewise, some passengers are the cause of Sotrama being overcrowded because they see it already full but purposely enter it. Treated with respect by these apprentices, the passengers end up with all sorts of names. Old people, jokingly or often mockingly, are called “Korokara” which means turtle, and young women are not even talked about. Returning coins to passengers is quite a problem because it is often done knowingly. Additionally, the elderly suffer because the Prantikai do not keep their promise once they enter it.

“I gave 1000 FCFA to Prantikai, he didn’t give me my change and I lost sight of him. I have to walk to “Worokourou” the Cola place, and I am with my children and my luggage but I have no more money. I leave him with God.” Madame Djiré. Note that Sotrama apprentices do it all day long and receive curse blows everywhere, many people are victims. “Sotrama apprentices or drivers are the same. They have no respect for the passengers, yet they and we are interdependent, without passengers there is no Sotrama and without Sotrama travel would be difficult. Many people think that hanging on the gate of a Sotrama is the work of delinquents, but let’s listen to this apprentice who is different from the others. “I am a student, I do not share the opinion that all Sotrama apprentices are the same. I do this job when I don’t have classes at school to satisfy my needs and often those of my parents. I am not ashamed of being a learner driver, I earn through the sweat of my brow and I am proud of it. » Amadou, an apprentice driver. “I was surprised one day to see such a respectful, wise and humble Prantikai. If only all the apprentice drivers were like him, the trip to Sotrama would be more profitable. »

Conclusion

Let’s not forget that SOTRAMAs are the daily lives of people who hire housekeepers to sell little things to eat and drink to passengers. Sotrama was founded in 1978 with an initial authorization to operate six lines in the capital of the three Caymans.
