Tips to protect yourself from mosquitoes

Introduction

Mosquitoes are one of the most common problems in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. They can transmit serious diseases such as malaria, dengue fever and West Nile virus.

Entomologists, parasitologists and many climate experts agree that global warming is worsening, encouraging mosquitoes to spread at a rapid rate. Here are five simple tips to protect yourself from mosquitoes.

Always use repellents.

Mosquitoes may be small insects, but they are no less dangerous. It’s important to use special products called repellents.  Repellents are products that repel mosquitoes and prevent them from biting us. They come in different forms: lotions, sprays or even bracelets. You can apply a mosquito repellent lotion or spray to your skin or clothes, or wear the bracelet on your wrist or ankle. The repellent will create an odour that mosquitoes don’t like, and they will move away from you. There are also products called long-lasting insecticides (LLINs), which are nothing more than insecticides. ILDAs kill mosquitoes. You can apply them to walls and surfaces to kill any mosquitoes that land on them. ILDAs are long-acting, which means they remain active for a long time and continue to kill mosquitoes even after application.

Sleep under a mosquito net.

Mosquitoes are flying insects. It’s important to take steps to prevent them from entering your home. These include the use of mosquito nets. Better known as fine fabric nets, they are installed on doors, windows and beds to prevent direct contact with mosquitoes in the home or in the bed. Mosquito nets are available in different sizes and shapes to suit different needs. It’s important to make sure that mosquito nets are properly installed and that there are no holes in them. Mosquitoes can easily get through the holes. It’s also important to ensure that the screens are securely fastened and don’t come loose easily.

Eliminate stagnant water.

It’s important to drain stagnant water and cover bodies of water to prevent mosquitoes from proliferating. Mosquitoes need stagnant water to lay their eggs and reproduce. If you leave stagnant water in your garden or on your terrace, this can create an environment conducive to the growth of mosquito populations. Mosquito nets can prevent mosquitoes from entering bodies of water and laying their eggs. By preventing mosquitoes from breeding, you can reduce the mosquito population in your environment and reduce the risk of transmitting all those diseases that are often carried by mosquitoes. What’s more, reducing the mosquito population can improve your quality of life by reducing mosquito bites and the associated discomfort.

Wear protective clothing.

Wearing long-sleeved clothing can offer extra protection against mosquito bites. Mosquitoes can easily bite through light, tight clothing, but long-sleeved clothing can help prevent mosquitoes from reaching the skin. Loose-fitting, lightweight clothing can also help reduce body heat and perspiration, which attract mosquitoes.

Conclusion

Eliminating mosquitoes is now more than just a duty for everyone. It should be noted that mosquitoes can carry diseases even if they show no signs of infection.  Take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, even if you don’t see any in your environment.
