THE FACE OF POCKET-SIZED FEMINISM

Introduction

Feminism refers to the advocacy of rights on the basis of equality of all the sexes. That means all genders have access to equal rights, opportunities, and privileges. A Feminist is a human being who supports equal rights for both men and women. That means a man can identify as a feminist too.

In the past, the world was torn by chauvinistic patriarchy that did not give men and women an equal footing. In most communities, women could not enjoy the privileges as their male counterparts. Thanks to the birth of Feminism, the modern world today has done a better job of improving the dynamics in most societies.

Pocket Sized Feminism

“Pocket-Sized Feminism” means being scared to identify as a Feminist or the cause of Feminism. Today, when a woman identifies as a “Feminist” she is quickly misjudged as violent, hating men, dramatic, and likes to cause trouble. To identify as a Feminist in the modern world has become like a new slur, A kind of taboo that some people are afraid of associating with a good cause that was started for the betterment of human rights and a better society. The poem titled; “Pocket Sized Feminism” by the talented poet Blythe Baird explains that we usually wear a “pocket size” of feminism because we are afraid. The initial cause of feminism becoming a game changer to promote a harmonious society for all human beings has been ruined by the war of misandry, dislike or prejudice against men and misogyny, dislike or prejudice against women. Most misogynists have quickly blamed Feminism for the prejudicial attitude of misandrists. Yet, there is a difference between Feminism and Misandry.

Feminism is a cause that includes both men and women. Even if it is called; “Feminism” derived from femininity because it was initially a movement built to advocate for women’s rights, it has propagated into a crusade considering both genders. That means, Feminism gives crucial attention to human rights, mental health, suicide, and sexual assault of men in the same way as their female counterparts. Feminism builds and unites. Feminism is a cause for the unification of society. Misandry, on the other hand, tears and divides societies. It is a war between one party versus another. Misandry usually breeds misogyny, which destroys harmonious coexistence between men and women.

Conclusion

The majority has misinterpreted feminism as a cause. Its beauty and initiative to promote a harmonious table has been misunderstood due to the war between Misandry and Misogyny. Unless there is more education on the proper definition of “Feminism” and a “Feminist,” both women and girls will be ashamed to associate with a movement supporting their well-being. So, will men continue to misjudge women who choose to identify with feminism as violent, angry haters of men who like to cause trouble? We need to educate our children and community on the proper education of this movement. That way, people won’t have to wear a “pocket-sized” amount of feminism.
