MANGROVES

Introduction

Did you know that mangroves are one of the most important ecosystems for our well-being? This is partly attributed to its wealth (agricultural land, grazing area, medicinal plants, particular landscape) and fragility (disappear at the slightest modification of the physical characteristics). The mangrove is a rare ecosystem located at the buffer zone between land and sea. They grow along the coasts, in calm and low oxygenated waters. They have an abundant biodiversity, from the point of view of fauna and flora. There are particular species like mangrove trees that can sometimes go up to more than 15m in height. These species have roots that are both aerial and submerged.

Importance of Mangrove

This precious ecosystem, of which June 26 is the international day, provides spawning and rearing habitat for fish, birds, molluscs and shrimp. It should be noted that in Cameroon alone, more than 30% of the coastal population needs come from mangrove’s resources, in particular through the exploitation of fishery products, non-timber and ligneous.

This essential ecosystem is one of the best weapons against climate change, due to its strong capacity to catch up carbon. Indeed, every year in the world, mangroves store nearly 34 million tons of CO2. They regulate not only the micro but also the macroclimate. In addition to this, mangroves perform multiple functions which can take place as follows:

They stabilize coasts and serve as barriers against continental erosion, strong winds, storms and floods. By behaving like “sponges’ ‘ that collect rainwater and flood water. They recharge the groundwater and promote the purification of wastewater.

They have beyond aesthetic values, a therapeutic value. Because many medicinal plants are found there, and are used by the local communities. They have a very important cultural value because it’s a place of rites, spiritual retreat and a place where some local communities can continue to preserve their identities.

Threats to Mangrove

Despite their proven importance, in Cameroon alone, the rate of disappearance is around 6.2%, or nearly 1082 ha/year. And nearly 16% at the African level, or nearly 500,000 ha over the past 25 years. The main threats to the well-being of this ecosystem are as follows. Very strong demographic pressure associated with anarchic exploitation of resources, bad information (some see them as a reservoir of mosquitoes and reptiles). The development of rice cultivation, economic development and ever-increasing urbanizationIt’s now a question, for our well-being at all, of becoming aware of their fundamental importance and to carry out ecological compensation.

Conclusion

The water crisis affects nearly 2 billion people, and mangroves are a solution because they desalinate the water that enters the continent and feed the water tables. Let us be aware of their importance and proceed to ecological compensation.

LET’S PLANT MANGROVE TREES!!! LET’S PRESERVE THE MANGROVES!!!
