In the current world, infections are so common to almost everyone, and at least to fight this, most of us have had drugs administered to our bodies.  Have you ever wondered what happens when a drug is administered to your body? When a drug is administered to our bodies, there is what the body does to it and what the drugs do to the body. Scientifically this is termed as pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of the drug, respectively.

what the body does to the drug (pharmacokinetics)

After administration of the drug, about four processes happen to the drug carried out by the body.

  • First and foremost, drugs administered orally get absorbed into circulation using different transport mechanisms such as diffusion, active transport and endocytosis.
  • After being absorbed, the drugs get distributed inside and outside the body cells.
  • Within the cell, the drugs are metabolized primarily in the liver. During metabolism, the drugs are biotransformed into forms which are easily cleared.
  • Finally, the hepatic, biliary, and renal systems eliminate the drug from the body.

What the drug does to the body (pharmacodynamics)

When an administered drug comes into contact with target cells, it interacts with their receptors (binding sites) to cause cellular response. The cellular responses usually are changes in the physiological (functioning), biochemical (metabolism) and cellular effects of the body’s cells.                                                                                        These cellular responses collectively affect the aim of the drug administration, causing recovery from different illnesses.

Importance of understanding pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics

Understanding pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics is vital because it aids us in comprehending how drugs behave in the body and how the body reacts to them. This enables medical workers to suggest suitable doses and drugs for the treatment of different diseases.

Understanding the interaction between drugs and the body is important because it helps us use drugs with discipline. This affects the treatment process and prevents toxicity while handling these drugs. Therefore, we need to understand me much more.
