DRINKING WATER

DRINK WATER FOR A HEALTHY LIFE

Our bodies are made up of 60% water and the cell; which is a basic structure and functional unit of the body that performs all processes that make an organism a living entity is made up of 80% water. This indicates that much of our body is water and because of that, one would look at water as one of the essential components of the body. Water is all around us in streams, rivers and lakes. It is usually channelled into pipes and extended to homes as tapped water or processed and bottled for sale. The best water to drink is one which is either boiled or treated to remove contaminants.

When is Somebody Considered to Have Less Water in The Body?

Somebody is considered as dehydrated when their body water content is below the normal. The obvious sign of dehydration is feeling thirsty always. Dehydration has a variety of causes ranging from physiological failure of body water regulatory mechanism to pathological conditions:

  • Little or no ingestion of enough water for a long time: People take long hours without drinking and if they do so, they drink just a little amount. However, the body loses water in sweat, urine and faeces, therefore water loss recovery is minimal and eventually causes dehydration.

  • The body also loses a considerable amount of water as a result of fevers that come along with pathological conditions like Malaria: Fevers are associated with high temperatures which accelerate the loss of body water as sweat and if not reversed excessive sweat production eventually causes dehydration.

  • Failure of the body to retain water via the kidney: Usually, a considerable amount of water is reabsorbed during urine formation. In case physiological mechanisms of the kidney fail; much water is lost as urine and continuous loss of a high amount of water through urine causes dehydration.

  • Some percentage of water in the body can also be lost during exhalation in vapour, vomiting, tears and faeces: If all are combined at once with a low water intake, dehydration is more likely to occur.

Why You Should Drink Enough Water?

Somebody who drinks water is said to be hydrated, it’s advisable to drink the correct amount of water per day. It is advisable to take about 3.7litres for males and about 2.7 litres for women.

  • Water is important as it provides a medium in which biochemical reactions occur and this boosts the functioning of the body. Metabolic reactions such as the breakdown of food to release energy occur in the water component of cells.

  • Drinking enough water stabilizes the blood pressure by bringing about a correct blood volume. This ensures a continuous supply of oxygen to important body organs such as the brain and other respiring tissues. This prevents hypoxia and ensures that body organs that require energy continue working normally.

  • Water also plays a protective role: Drinking enough water clears off bacteria as they try to invade the Urinary system to cause Urinary Tract Infections.

  • Drinking enough water also prevents constipation which is a painful condition if encountered.

CONCLUSION

Drinking water is a healthy practice and each person is advised to drink a considerable amount of water per day. A glass of water per hour can save you from a lot of health complications that would bring discomfort to you. Above all, water for drinking should be free from contaminants and thus should either be boiled or treated.
