Introduction
Have you made the experience of being drunk and tried to sleep? There are many people who have been drunk once in their lives and had a hangover the following day. What a pleasant feeling, isn’t it? Wow, the quality of sleep is second to none; “it’s like flowing on the Dead Sea peacefully and calmly”, as some people might say. Alcohol may give you a kick at the moment, but its consequences can be lasting.
Alcohol Consumption in Society
Alcohol consumption is the socially acceptable norm in today’s society; same line with cigarette smoking, compared to consumption of soft drugs like Cannabis. But it’s high time we stop this hypocrisy and take some concrete actions against the sale and consumption of alcohol. Alcohol is often branded as something cool and trendy, targeting both men and women during music festivals, corporate events and other social gatherings. “Have a small sip; it will not harm you that much” is often heard by teenage boys and girls during their college days, but the side effects are: poor grades at school, violent behaviours, rapes, bullying, sexual assault, to name a few.
Alcohol as an Escape from Problems
In addition, some even say that alcohol helps you to get right of your problems, though it does but only for a brief moment. When you drink a spirit, there is a feel-good factor deep inside. All your worries are put aside, you enjoy the moment, but it’s like an adrenaline that keeps you going on and on; you seek a refuge in it and this leads to alcoholism in the long run. Sleep patterns disorders, lack of concentration, physical unfitness, withdrawal symptoms, bad breath smell, violent behaviours, disruption of family cells, crimes, accidents, and loss of jobs are all the side effects of alcoholism.
Alcohol and Sleep Quality
Nevertheless, alcohol helps you sleep better as the mind is in a sleeping state. Yes, this might seem absurd, but anyone who has consumed a reasonable amount of alcohol will tell you they had a good sleep unless you have been drunk. In the drunkard state, sleep patterns are disturbed and you are irritated and then the hangover comes the next day. Effects of a hangover are: migraine, dehydration, mood swings, sleeping, lack of motivation to do anything; in short, you just want this state to be over as it is not a pleasant one. If you want a healthy population, the government must take concrete actions against the sale and consumption of alcohol. The myth around sleep quality under the influence of alcohol is just a social trend to keep the population under control, as the revenues generated from alcohol are a huge one for both the companies and the government in terms of taxes.
