Cultural identity: Wearing natural and traditional hair

Introduction

Having become fashionable in the 2000s, natural hair known as Nappy and its traditional models are rising from the ashes. On social networks, we’ve seen an explosion of photos of nappy hair and traditional styles, which for a long time were considered unattractive, unkempt or even comb-breaking. Now, the natural and traditional hair trend is making a comeback and has a new following.

Natural and Happy: Nappy

Nappy natural hair is frizzy Afro hair, unique to Central, Western and Eastern Africa. Natural and happy are the watchwords of these women, who want to reconnect with their traditions and highlight their identity and culture through their appearance.

Worn by international stars, celebrities and ordinary citizens, nappy hair has won over the general public and is chosen for major events and occasions, fashion shows or just for everyday beauty.

Each African country has its own models of traditional plaits with their own connotations: love, mourning, indicators of social status, marital status and over the ages during the black slave trade; symbols of demands, struggle and liberation. Most traditional hairstyles are made using thread, pearls or shells.

Conclusion

Unlike Brazilian locks and weaves, which are conditioned by straightening and artificial products, the texture of Afro hair requires gentle daily treatment and maintenance using essentially natural products.

The most common types of traditional African hairstyle today are: peasant braids, bantu knots, chenilles (twist/plaited vanilles), spike braids, the Baoba hairstyle, Egyptian braids (4 branches).

Simple or sophisticated plaits; braids at the nape of the neck, chenilles, hair arranged in a certain style, all models that reveal natural African beauty, its richness and diversity.
