Introduction

USDt is a digital dollar, specifically a stablecoin issued by Tether. Sorted uses USDt as one of the main digital currencies that people can hold, send, receive and use for everyday transactions through the wallet.

USDt in Simple Terms

Think of USDt as a digital representation of the US dollar that operates on blockchain networks. USDt are designed to maintain a value close to US$1, unlike cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin, that will fluctuate the market price significantly.

With Sorted, users can use USDt to:

• Send and receive money from other people, wallets or exchanges
• Pay for everyday needs, where Sorted’s supported services are available
• Buy airtime and data
• Pay certain bills, through Sorted’s Market in supported regions
• Cash out into local currency through supported mobile-money or bank-account services

Currently, Sorted supports receiving USDt on Ethereum, BNB Chain, Celo, Polygon, Tron and TON, while Bitcoin itself isn’t supported for receiving USDt. The correct network matters when sending funds because sending an asset through the wrong network can result in lost funds.

Why does Sorted use USDt?

Sorted uses USDt as “digital dollars” that is intended to make digital money more practical for everyday use. Its wallet is non-custodial; that means that Sorted says that its users can control their own wallet and funds, rather than letting Sorted hold them as a traditional bank would.

One important thing to remember:

USDt isn’t the same as having US dollars in a bank account. It is a crypto-asset (stablecoin), and Sorted even states that virtual assets are not legal tender or cash, and are not covered by deposit insurance.
