Introduction

Road safety remains a major challenge in Burkina Faso. Many road users do not always comply with traffic regulations, leading to serious human losses and significant material damage. To effectively address road indiscipline and reduce corruption involving security officers and road users during traffic violations, a modern road safety initiative known as automated video traffic enforcement became operational from August 1, 2026.

Targeted Traffic Violations

In the context of road safety, a traffic violation refers to the failure to comply with laws governing road use. Such violations require the offender to pay a fine. Several offences will be addressed through this modernized traffic control system, including failure to obey traffic lights, not wearing a seat belt, using a mobile phone while driving and speeding.

How the System Works

Automated video traffic enforcement relies on intelligent cameras installed along major roads in Ouagadougou. These cameras will automatically detect traffic violations, identify vehicle registration plates and send notifications to offenders through mobile phone services. The system is also designed to facilitate the payment of fines through the Faso Arzeka digital platform.

Penalties for Failure to Pay Fines

Once a violation has been confirmed and the offender receives an official notification containing all required information, they are required to pay the corresponding fine. To allow road users sufficient time to comply, a one-month deadline is granted. After this period, failure to pay may result in the confiscation of the vehicle during road checks or technical inspections. Additional consequences may include penalties and community service obligations. These measures aim to encourage greater responsibility among road users and strengthen compliance with traffic regulations.

Conclusion

It is often said that the road kills. Between March 1 and March 31, 2026, Burkina Faso recorded 1,803 road accidents, resulting in 1,310 injuries and 99 deaths. This alarming situation highlights the urgent need for citizens to strictly respect traffic regulations. For now, automated video traffic enforcement will only be implemented in Ouagadougou, the capital city of Burkina Faso. Nevertheless, it represents an important innovation that could significantly improve road discipline, enhance accountability and contribute to safer roads.
