Crack the Code: How to Outsmart the ATS and Get Your Resume Seen

Introduction

The Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is a living nightmare haunting most applicants. Usually, this is the reason for blocking the most qualified candidates who misrepresent themselves due to missing the new game rules. It is the digital gatekeeper preceding the human screening. Hence, no matter how qualified potential candidates are, they will not be granted access to human recruiters unless their resumes are optimized for the ATS. The language of human recruiters differs from that of ATS. Winning candidates are those who manage to make their resumes speak “bot” fluently. Don’t worry, though. I’ve got your back!

Keyword Mastery: Speaking the Language of the Bot

The number one key to mastering the art of ATS compatibility is keyword optimization. Recruiters program their ATS to spot keywords matching skills required for filling the job advertised in the original posting shared by the company. To beat this system, candidates should “mirror” the job description. This can be fulfilled via using the same keywords posted in the job description to ensure ATS compatibility. Therefore, listing your current job responsibilities is not sufficient. They have to be phrased to match the high-priority keywords and mentioned in your professional summary as well as the experience section.  This enhances your ranking in the recruiter’s search results.

Format Matters: Keeping it Simple for Seamless Scanning

What appeals to the human eye is the deal beaker to the ATS. This applies to fancy layouts and graphics interrupting the smooth scanning of resumes. Usually, ATS cannot read tables, images, headers, or complex formatting. Eventually, this leads to a jumbled mess of data. Hence, the only way out here is to use the clean, single-column layout, which includes using standard fonts such as Arial. Meanwhile, sections should be headed using famous headings spotted by ATS to identify your career milestones, e.g., “Work Experience” and “Education”.

Results over Responsibilities: The Power of Quantifiable Data

Passing the initial scanning stage leads to another one where human beings read your resume. Satisfying both bots and human recruiters necessitates highlighting measurable achievements. For instance, instead of stating that you managed a team, you should probably state that you “led a team of 20 members to increase sales by 30% over 3 months.” ATS algorithms tend to give your resume a higher level of priority over other candidates when mentioning numbers, percentages, and amounts to provide solid proof of value in the market.

Conclusion

Rules of today’s job market are dramatically changing to impose the necessity of building a resume that is ATS compatible and human recruiter appealing in the meantime. This makes it more competitive. Initially, following three main steps can increase this competitiveness, mastering keywords, prioritizing a clean format, and highlighting measurable results. This is a necessary step to get the interview.
