Introduction
Forests are often perceived as collections of immobile trees that grow naturally over time. However, in the Congo Basin, the forest is a continuous construction site that does not develop on its own. In national parks in Gabon such as Lopé and Ivindo, animals play a central role in maintaining its balance. Without their movements, feeding habits, and interactions with plants, the forest would be less dense, less diverse, and less effective in storing carbon.
The Forest Elephant: The Selective “Bulldozer”
The forest elephant (Loxodonta cyclotis) is one of the most influential actors in this ecosystem. As it moves through the forest, it tramples young shrubs and mainly consumes fast-growing plants that quickly capture light. From a scientific perspective, this has a major effect: it limits the dominance of the most opportunistic plant species and creates space for slow-growing trees. These trees produce denser wood and store more carbon. Contrary to popular belief, elephants do not damage the forest; they thin it and make it more resilient in the long term.
Great Apes and Hornbills: The Sowers of Life
Gorillas, chimpanzees, and large birds such as hornbills play an essential complementary role. By consuming fruits and traveling long distances, they disperse seeds far from the parent tree. Without these “natural transporters,” certain tree species would gradually disappear. Seeds falling directly beneath the mother tree would be more vulnerable to disease and competition, preventing forest regeneration.
Gabon: A Living Laboratory
Gabon is currently one of the last countries where these interactions between fauna and flora can still be observed on a large scale. Maintaining animal populations is therefore not only a moral or aesthetic choice, but a true forest management strategy. A forest deprived of its wildlife becomes an “empty forest,” less capable of storing carbon and regulating the climate.

Interdependence as a Lesson. In the Congo Basin, protecting an animal means protecting a tree. Protecting a tree means protecting the global climate. This interdependence reminds us that biodiversity conservation is at the heart of the planet’s ecological balance.
