Digital Transformation in Healthcare Across North Africa

Introduction 

Distances pose real challenges to people’s daily lives. Long journeys, overcrowded hospitals, and shortages of healthcare workers make routine medical care difficult to access in many African countries. However, digital technology is creating new opportunities to overcome these barriers. Morocco and Egypt are among the countries leading this digital transformation in North Africa. While both healthcare systems continue to face governance challenges, particularly around centralising healthcare services and expanding universal health coverage, they have recognised that improving healthcare is not only about building more hospitals. It is also about making healthcare smarter, faster, and easier to access.

 

Telemedicine Growth

Telemedicine has witnessed rapid growth across Africa, with start-ups seizing the opportunity to lower barriers between patients and healthcare professionals through mobile phones and computers while also improving affordability. In Morocco, platforms such as DabaDoc allow patients to search for doctors, book appointments, and consult healthcare professionals online. Egypt has developed similar services through Vezeeta, one of the country’s most widely used healthcare platforms. Patients can compare doctors, schedule appointments, and receive prescriptions without spending hours waiting in clinics. For people living far from major cities or those with limited mobility, these services make healthcare considerably more accessible.

Although online consultations are generally limited to common illnesses and conditions that do not require advanced diagnostic equipment, they remain extremely valuable. They provide mental health support, offer medical guidance, and help patients decide whether they should seek in-person care. These services became particularly important during the COVID-19 pandemic, when they reduced the psychological stress associated with lockdowns and social distancing while allowing patients to continue accessing medical advice. 

 

Electronic health records and Databases

Digital health is also changing what happens behind the scenes. Traditionally, hospitals have relied on paper documents that can easily be misplaced or become difficult to share between healthcare providers. Electronic health records are replacing these paper files with secure digital systems that store a patient’s medical history, prescriptions, laboratory results, and vaccination records in one place.

Electronic databases may appear to be a simple innovation, but they can make a significant difference. Important information can be shared more quickly and transparently, reducing delays and allowing patients to receive more coordinated care. By reducing administrative friction during treatment, healthcare providers can also encourage patients to return for regular check-ups– an aspect of healthcare whose importance is often overlooked. Many people only visit a doctor when they become seriously ill, yet regular health check-ups, with intervals depending on an individual’s age and risk factors, are equally important. Preventive care allows healthcare professionals to detect non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes or hypertension, at an earlier stage, making it easier to slow disease progression through medication or lifestyle changes. This is particularly relevant for many African countries that are entering the later stages of the epidemiological transition, where chronic diseases are replacing infectious diseases as the leading causes of illness and death.

 

Artificial Intelligence and Healthcare Innovation 

Artificial intelligence is also beginning to support healthcare professionals by assisting with medical diagnosis, analysing medical images, identifying disease patterns, and improving hospital resource management. Beyond clinical care, healthcare organisations and pharmaceutical companies are developing large language models and AI tools to streamline administrative processes, such as contract management and regulatory documentation. These technologies help hospitals process paperwork more efficiently and enable medicines and medical services to reach patients sooner. At the national level, ministries of health can use AI to identify population-wide health trends, while regional and provincial authorities can analyse local spatial patterns to strengthen disease surveillance and improve epidemic preparedness. Together, these innovations allow healthcare professionals to spend more time focusing on patients while AI handles repetitive, data-intensive tasks.

 

Challenges

However, digital technology is not a complete solution. Both Morocco and Egypt continue to face structural challenges in ensuring that healthcare is affordable and accessible for everyone. Although both countries are expanding universal health coverage, many people still face out-of-pocket payments, copayments, or gaps in insurance coverage that can discourage them from seeking care. Rural communities also continue to experience shortages of healthcare professionals and limited access to specialist services. Expanding digital healthcare therefore requires not only investment in technology, training, infrastructure, and cybersecurity, but also broader healthcare reforms that improve financial protection and equitable access to care. Despite these challenges, both countries recognise digital health as an important component of modernising their healthcare systems. This is reflected in the growing collaboration between governments, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, and technology firms to develop digital platforms, share knowledge, and expand access to specialist care.

 

Conclusion

The experiences of Morocco and Egypt demonstrate that the future of healthcare is about much more than new medicines or larger hospitals. It is about connecting people to care more quickly, using information more effectively, and ensuring that quality healthcare reaches communities wherever they live. As digital technology continues to develop across Africa, these two countries offer an encouraging example of how innovation can help build stronger, more resilient healthcare systems for everyone.
