Disability Is Not Inability: A Call for Equal Opportunity

Introduction

For many people living with disabilities, life is not just about managing a condition; it is about surviving a society that often overlooks them. From childhood, some are denied education, basic care, and even love from those closest to them. Others are left on the streets, exposed to harsh weather, forced to beg just to survive. But the question we should ask ourselves is simple: are they truly incapable, or have we failed to create space for them?

The Pain of Being Left Behind

Disability often comes with rejection. Some families feel overwhelmed and withdraw support, while communities label individuals as burdens. Even those who manage to go to school and gain skills face discrimination when seeking jobs. According to David Mureithi, “The greatest barrier is not the disability, but the belief that disabled people cannot succeed.” This mindset limits opportunities and forces many into lives they never chose.

Seeing Through Their Eyes

Imagine waking up in a world where no one believes in your potential. Where people see your condition before they see you. If we truly placed ourselves in their position, we would understand the importance of inclusion. Many people with disabilities are creative, intelligent, and hardworking. As Amina Niyonsaba said, “What we need is not pity, but a fair chance.” With access to education, skills, and support, they can build meaningful and independent lives.

Creating a World of Possibilities

A person without limbs can still run a business. Someone without sight can still learn and teach. Mental strength and determination matter more than physical limitations. Instead of pushing people toward begging, societies should invest in inclusive systems that empower them. Equal access to education, jobs, and resources is not an act of kindness; it is a responsibility.

Conclusion

Disability should never define a person’s worth or future. No one deserves to be abandoned, ignored, or forced into begging simply because they are different. When we choose to include rather than exclude, we build stronger and more compassionate communities. The change begins with a shift in mindset, seeing ability where others see limitations, and creating opportunities where none existed before.
