THE IMPACT OF HARMFUL TRADITIONS AND CUSTOMS ON HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION IN TANZANIAN SOCIETY

Introduction

Human rights are fundamental freedoms and rights that every individual is entitled to regardless of age, religion, gender, ethnicity, or social status. Despite the existence of laws and International Conventions protecting these rights, harmful traditions and customs continue to contribute to the violation of human rights in many societies. In Tanzania, some cultural practices and beliefs have negatively affected the well-being, dignity, and equality of individuals, particularly women and children.

Harmful Traditions and Customs in Tanzania

Several traditional practices still exist in some parts of Tanzania, including Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), child marriage, window inheritance, discrimination against women in matters of property ownership, and killing people due to superstitious beliefs. Although these practices are rooted in culture and traditions, they often conflict with fundamental human rights.

Effects On Human Rights

Violation of the rights to life and security: Some harmful customs expose individuals to violence and even death. Example: Attacks and killing of people violate their right to life and personal security.

Health Related Problems: Issues like Female Genital Mutilation have serious physical and psychological consequences for girls and women, it violates their right to health and body fitness.

Denial of the right to education: Child marriage forces many girls to drop out to school at an early age, limiting their opportunities for education and personal development.

Violation of Human Dignity: These practices that stigmatize and discriminate against certain groups of people deprive them of their dignity and freedom, which are essential human rights.

Way Forward

The Government of Tanzania, together with non-governmental organization and International partners, has taken seriously measure to address these harmful traditions and customs by enacting laws that prohibit child marriage and Female Genital Mutilation, promoting education and awareness campaigns on Human Rights, empowering women and girls through education and economic opportunities, strengthening law enforcement to protect vulnerable groups also encouraging communities to abandon harmful cultural practices.

Conclusion

While culture and traditions are important aspects of society, practices that violate human rights should not be tolerated. Tanzania has made significant progress in addressing harmful customs, but continuous efforts are needed to ensure that all individuals enjoy their rights and freedoms. Community education and the enforcement of laws are essential in promoting a society that respects and protects human rights for everyone.
