Why reading is an important skill to learn

BY ALICE CARR

Being able to read is one of the most important skills a child can have. If a child learns to read, they are much more likely to go to school, get educated and have a better life. For a child who can read, the possibilities are endless. But reading can be difficult, and many children struggle. Having parents to help them read can make all the difference.
Learning to read starts in the home. Children whose parents can read are much more likely to be able to read themselves, and as a parent, you can sit with your child and read stories with them every night. Remember, parents are children’s first teachers, and this is incredibly important for children.
The most powerful part of reading is learning new information – information changes lives. By reading, you open up whole new worlds of information, you can learn new skills; you can become a better person. You can learn about everything, from health, to art, to farming. Anything you want to learn, you can read about in a book. And all this information that you learn can be passed onto your children. I’m sure you’ll agree that learning to read is so important for both you and your child.
Learning to read may seem difficult at first, but just remember: it gets easier everyday and the skills you will gain from reading will help you and your children. The more you read, the more you will know, and the more your children know.
