Quality Education

EFFECTS OF THE GAP BETWEEN YOUNG PEOPLE AND ACCESS TO QUALITY EDUCATION

Education is one of the basic requirements of life. Once it is effectively carried out, it equips  individuals to become responsible and valuable members of society. They become more aware of themselves while understanding her environment. Due to the importance of education at the individual and the communal level, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights affirmed it as one of our fundamental human rights. Consequently, there has been a significant increase in the number of children and young people with access to education in Africa and the world at large. Even with this increase in numbers, the big question remains; are African youths truly taught to become responsible and valuable members of society?

What does Quality Education Entail?

Quality education ensures inclusive and equitable quality lifelong learning opportunities for everyone. To achieve this, it embraces a combination of different aspects such as appropriate skills development, gender parity, provision of relevant school infrastructure, equipment, educational materials and resources, scholarships, or teaching force. It implies that, for education to be effective or to attain its goal of transforming young people into fully-rounded individuals in society, it needs to meet up with the above-mentioned standards.

How the Gap between Youths and Quality Education affects them

Unfortunately, the issue of appropriate skill development in most educational settings in Cameroon and other parts of the world is generally overlooked. This results in many young educated people who find it hard to transition into the professional world due to the lack of basic skills required to survive in a professional setting. For example, many high school students and undergraduates lack research skills to help them access information and training opportunities required for them to start and grow career-wise. Also, many students are not well equipped in basic skills like computer, communication, and CV development skills required to enter and grow in most organizations. Consequently, they find it hard to integrate into the professional world.

Conclusion

It shows that even with the positive increase in the number of young people with access to education, there is still a problem hindering them from attaining their goal of becoming fully-rounded individuals capable of transitioning easily into the professional world. Therefore, aside from laying focus on the academic part of educational training, there is a need for more emphasis on soft skills  to develop young people. In this way, our goal of education would be truly attained.
