Drug Abuse

Drug abuse in Nigeria

Interactions with the global community are an inevitable reality of a modern nation-state and society. Nigeria is the most populous and, of course, the giant of Africa, with a wide range of human capital and diversity, Technology and know-how. The richness of natural resources, land and biodiversity has given it a tremendous advantage of excelling in this global interactions and trade, making it the epithet of the largest economy notwithstanding. Unfortunately, capacity inadequacy, displacement of priority, poor governance, and other factors such as drug abuse continue to hamper Nigeria from realising its great potential.

The harm

In 2018, about 14.3 million Nigerians were involved in drug abuse, as the National drug use survey revealed, a significant prevalence that’s even greater than the global average. Most drug users are in their young and productive ages of 15-64. Drug abuse has caused a significant setback to Nigeria’s socio-economic, cultural, political, and moral activities. The psychological and mental health of youths who engage in this act is greatly affected. Many drug users have become poor due to unemployment, reduced work productivity and efficiency, social dysfunction, and violence.

The way forward

Since drug misuse harms people and society, substantial measures can be taken to lessen its overall impacts. One of the best and most efficient ways to stop this detrimental behaviour is to evaluate policies. Drug agencies, law enforcement, government and the general public should reduce the stigmatisation experienced by drug users; instead, counsel and foster a sense of belonging. This can go a long way in reducing the cruelty and criminality the act can cause.

Moreover, public awareness educates, empowers, enlightens, and trains the masses on how detrimental and lethal drug abuse is to individuals and the nation. Educating and informing the nation will drastically reduce the number of drug users and potential users that find its use attractive. Finally, before anybody is eligible for any political position, drug testing should be used by different drug agencies and INEC to test and screen all political aspirants and candidates. This will serve as a deterrent to youth with political ambition not to engage in drugs.

In conclusion, drug abuse is an important issue that all Nigerians should engage in and confront to ensure that it’s been eradicated and stabilise Nigerians’ socio-economic position.
