The importance of celebrating heritage

There has historically been a tendency for Africans to shy away from celebrating their heritage, as a result of decades of imperialism. But now the tide is turning and there are many more examples of people actively celebrating where they come from.

The reason why it has historically been difficult to celebrate African heritage is a result of historical power dynamics. The characteristics of those in power are often valued and associated with success. One of the power dynamics this can be seen in is gender. Although today, the playing field is a lot more even, the most powerful positions have historically been held by men. This often meant that for a woman to succeed, her ‘masculine’ characteristics needed to be prominent and her ‘feminine’ ones dulled. This valuing of the characteristics of the more dominant group has persisted even after the power dynamics have changed.

This very tendency can also be seen in the power dynamic of the colonised versus the colonisers. In many African states under colonial rule to succeed in any meaningful way, it became necessary to have characteristics akin to the ruling European elite, such as a European education, dress and habits. Interestingly and ironically, numerous African leaders who eventually led their countries to independence, were prime examples of this, such as Nkrumah in Ghana.

This historical tendency of valuing certain characteristics means that the characteristics which are ‘western’ are appreciated more. This naturally means that pride in one’s own native culture is lost, and this often remains in societies well after they become independent. Examples of this are evident in several African countries, such as the popularity of skin-whitening agents which reflect a deep-rooted desire to be closer to the white European ideal.

IS THE TIDE TURNING?

However, over the last two decades, there has been a clear movement in African countries to reclaim pride in heritage. There are several manifestations of this, such as the banning of skin-bleaching products in Ghana and Mali and even more obviously, initiatives to actively encourage people to celebrate their heritage. An example of the latter is evident in South Africa’s Heritage Day, which encourages a celebration of the diverse heritage of many South Africans, such as the Zulu, who were previously oppressed. This day, held on 24th September every year, encourages South Africans to celebrate wherever they come from whilst doing something which unites all South Africans – having a traditional South African barbecue – called braai. Such initiatives are important and allow the several different cultures in South Africa to showcase their pride in their heritage.

WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT?

It is clear that examples of power dynamics from history still remain in our societies today and impact how we measure success. It is important that we consciously challenge our perceptions today about why we regard some characteristics as synonymous with success. This will allow us to more clearly confront such deep-rooted and unfounded biases.

Woah! I’m really loving the template/theme of this blog. It’s simple, yet effective. A lot of times it’s hard to get that “perfect balance” between usability and appearance. I must say that you’ve done a fantastic job with this. In addition, the blog loads extremely fast for me on Firefox. Superb Blog!
