HOW TO REUSE OLD CANS

Old cans are really bad for the environment because they take over 500 years to break down. Humans throw away 200 billion cans every year! This is enough to reach to the moon and back 16 times a year. The number of cans that we are using is only growing and growing.

WHY THIS IS BAD

This is bad because we don’t have enough room for all of these cans. As we use more and more of them the world becomes full of waste. Nobody wants waste around because it looks ugly and can hold a lot of diseases. This can cause health problems for the people who leave near to them.

WHAT YOU CAN DO

This book will teach you how to recycle old cans so that you can help to save the environment. It will show you how to make them into a pot to cook from. It will also give you a couple of other ideas for how to reuse old cans. If we all do something little to reuse old cans then the problem will be much smaller. Everybody doing their own bit to help can have a huge impact.

WHY THEY ARE USEFUL

Old cans are really strong. They can be cut up and used or can be used in their normal form. You can cut up old cans to reinforce walls and ceilings. You can also tie them together in order to make bigger structures from them. For example people have used cans to make decorations or even to create new furniture in order to save money. Another idea is to cut off the top of the can and use it to store things. This can also be done with old tins. It is important to remember to wash cans before you use them.

  2. Put the old cans together in a clay furnace. Melt them down until they are molten.
  3. Cast the molten metal in a clay form in the shape of a pot. Then wait until this has cooled and set. You now have a pot.
  4. File the pot down so that it is smooth and clean it. This can then be used for cooking or boiling water.
