Education for All- UNESCO Education Initiatives in Sub-Saharan Africa

Education is vital ingredient for the development and wellbeing of countries. Since education has endless benefits, it is a universal human right according to the United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights. As such, The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) is keen on promoting sustainable development and education in sub-saharan Africa. This is of the highest importance since there are 43 million children not going to schools in sub-Saharan Africa. UNESCO refers to these goals as The Education for All (EFA) movement. The movement has a global commitment to provide quality basic education for everyone: children, youth and adults.

The Teacher Training Initiative for Sub-Saharan Africa (TTISSA) is one of UNESCO’s three core initiatives in education, along with the Global Initiative on Education and HIV and AIDS (EDUCAIDS) and the Literacy Initiative for Empowerment (LIFE). Lastly, the The Basic Education Africa Programme is targeted especially at reforming countries’ basic education program. In their own way, these initiatives all make sure that education is distributed as equally as possible and that problem areas are targeted effectively.

TEACHERS ARE AT THE CORE OF EDUCATION

The Teacher Training Initiative contributes to improve access, quality and equity of education and improves the quality and quantity of teachers in the Sub-Saharan Africa. The initiative supports countries that are members of the United Nations – also known as member states – in addressing teacher-related challenges over a period of ten years (2006-2015). Since teachers are the core of the education system, it is very important to train them and make sure they’re fully qualified to help their students get a quality education.

A GLOBAL INITIATIVE TO EDUCATE ABOUT AND LIMIT THE EFFECTS OF HIV AND AIDS

The Global Initiative on Education and HIV & AIDS seeks to promote, develop and support educational programs on HIV and AIDS. It aims to understand and address the impacts and challenges of HIV in various sectors of the state. The initiative has two primary goals: to utilise education to help prevent the spread of HIV; and to protect the core functions of the education system from the worst effects of the epidemic. This initiative shows the importance of education in relation to many fields, especially health. By raising awareness about diseases such as HIV and AIDS, a more healthy, cultivated society is made possible.

LITERACY IS KEY TO ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND EMPOWERMENT

UNESCO’s Literacy Initiative for Empowerment is a global strategic framework aiming to meet the Education for All goals, with particular focus on adult literacy and out-of-school children. The initiative targets the 35 countries that have a literacy rate of less than 50 percent or a population of more than 10 million people who cannot read nor write. This is very important because high levels of literacy include equipping pupils with literacy skills for life. This gives students better access to other education and employment opportunities.

As for me the issue of education in Africa especially in west Africa is that poverty and unqualified teachers can you imagine someone who only attended junior secondary school to come and handle primary school without any qualified training you can only see this in Africa
