UNESCO – The Importance of Improving Education

>

INTRODUCTION TO THE UNESCO

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) is part of the United Nations (UN). It was established in 1945 in response to the horrors of World War I (1914-1918) and World War II (1939-1945).

UNESCO’s goals include:

  • Promoting education
  • Eliminating poverty
  • Promoting human rights and
  • Achieving global peace and security.

In total, 195 countries are members of UNESCO. All 54 African nations are members.

UNESCO AND AFRICA

UNESCO and Africa have a long history. UNESCO has an ‘Africa Department’ that is responsible for overseeing Africa-related programs. This Department is in charge of accomplishing the goals of ‘Priority Africa’.

WHAT IS ‘PRIORITY AFRICA’?

UNESCO has supported, and continues to support, the African Union’s goal of achieving a peaceful Africa that plays a larger role in the international community. For the past 20 years, UNESCO has given African projects priority to help reach this goal. In 2014, UNESCO identified ‘Priority Africa’ as one of its two Global Priorities. Priority Africa will remain a Global Priority until 2021.
Under Priority Africa, UNESCO has identified four areas of interest:

  1. Improving education
  2. Encouraging the sharing of knowledge
  3. Building sustainable societies and
  4. Encouraging peace and security

UNESCO has promised to work with African nations and support their implementation of policies that aim to achieve these goals.

UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE COMMITTEE

Another role UNESCO plays is in identifying ‘World Heritage Sites’. A ‘World Heritage Site’ is a site classified by UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee as having cultural and natural importance. UNESCO aims to protect these places and encourage governments, both regional and national, to carry out management systems to preserve them for future generations.

Africa has many World Heritage Sites, including; Tanzania’s Kilimanjaro National Park, Zimbabwe’s Victoria Falls and the Pyramid Fields in Egypt. However, some African World Heritage Sites have been classified as being in danger due to civil war. UNESCO has identified a lack of African sites on the World Heritage List and it has promised to improve this.
