The Best African Footballers in the Premiership

For a long time now there have been many African footballers playing in the English Premier league, the best league in England.246 Africans have played in the Premier League, and altogether they have scored 1776 goals, making 14, 210 appearances. Some of the premierships best players have come from African over the last ten years, and I will talk about some of them now.

Didier Drogba,

from the Ivory Coast, was the premiership’s most successful African Striker. He scored 106 goals for Chelsea in the premiership. He was also very good at scoring in Cup Finals at Wembley stadium. Didier Drogba was known for being big and strong, and being an excellent finisher. He was one of the most feared strikers in the premiership, and won 3 premiership titles with Chelsea. He was voted as Chelsea’s best ever player, and is considered one of the premiership’s best every players.

Emmanuel Adebayor,

from Togo, is also an incredibly successful African Striker in the Premiership. He currently plays for Crystal Palace, but has also played for Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham, scoring 97 goals. Although he may be passed his best, he is still regarded as one of the premiership’s best ever African Strikers. He is known for his heading ability, and predatory instincts.

Yaya Toure,

also from Ivory Coast, is probably the premiership’s most successful African Midfielder. He has been part of a Manchester City team that has won two premiership titles and the FA Cup. He is known for being a box-to-box midfielder, meaning that he covers the entire midfield and enjoys running long distances with the ball. Defenders find him difficult to tackle because he is so massive. Yaya Toure is also known for having a brilliant long-shot, and scoring amazing goals.

Riyad Mahrez,

from Algeria, has just won the Premiership Footballer of the year award, for his performances with Leicester City this season. In 2015/2016 he has been involved in 28 goals, scoring 17 and providing 11 assists. He is a speedy winger, a great dribbler, and also a great goalscorer. He is the first African Player to win the Premiership Player of the year award.

John Obi Mikel,

from Nigeria, is one of the premiership’s longest serving African midfielders. He has played 236 times for Chelsea since joining in 2006. He is a defensive midfielder, and is often called upon as a substitute to make sure that Chelsea do not concede any goals. He almost signed for Manchester United, but Chelsea managed to steal him away at the last second.

Kolo Toure,

again from Ivory Coast, has more premiership appearances than any other player, with 349. He has played for Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool. He may also be past his best, but he is still a first team player for Liverpool, and manager Jurgen Klopp trusts him. He has certainly been one of the premiership’s best defenders.

Many of the premiership’s best African Footballers have come for the Ivory Coast, but Odion Ighalo, from Nigeria, is currently doing very well at Watford FC, and at the end of his career, Samuel Eto’o from Cameroon spent time at Everton and Chelsea, and even scored a hat-trick against Manchester United.

Some African footballers can truly be considered some of the premiership’s greatest ever players, and every year, more and more African footballers are coming to play in England. Football managers in England now know, more than ever, that Africa produces some excellent players.
