You can learn read & write as an adult

It’s never too late to learn to read and write. However old or young you are, this will open up skills and opportunities for you and for your family. It might feel like a big challenge at first but it will get simpler and simpler as you keep learning. You will see the benefits of it right away. There are many people at every age who are in a similar position, and by reading this we are already taking the first steps to learning to read and write, or getting better at reading and writing as an adult.

There are twenty-six letters in the English alphabet, each letter has its own sound and some letters make a different sound when they are next to each other. Every letter also has a capital and lower-case way of writing it, like ‘A’ and ‘a’, which change depending where they are in a word or a sentence. There are also punctuation marks that we use in sentences to help us understand them better. For example, a comma ‘,’ tells us to pause, and a question mark ‘?’ reminds us that a question is being asked.

We don’t have to remember all of these facts in one go. We can try taking one or even two letters every day and learning their sounds. Then, we can practice writing them out a few times in capital and lower-case. This might feel frustrating at first, but it will become easier with time. Try looking around in the street for the letters you have been learning. This will only take a few moments each time, but you’ll see how quickly you’re getting better.

After we have learnt a few letters, try learning to read short words using all the letters that you know. If we don’t understand the word straight away, we can make the sounds of each letter in the word separately to help us. And we don’t have to do it alone, either. We could ask as friend or family member to learn with us, or to help you if they can already read and write.

Learning to read and write at any age is very useful and we are never too old to start. Once we can read and write we will be able to pass on our new skills to friends, family and children too. Being able to read and write will allow us to enjoy many other things in life: we could read a newspaper to learn about things that are happening in our country and around the world, we will be able to use a computer to keep in touch with the people we love using emails or social networks and find out more about things that interest us.

In the world of work, we will find that learning how to read and write, even as an adult, will give us much more choice. The possibilities are endless! Even though it takes some time, learning how to read and write could give us the opportunity to get a better education, to learn a profession or even make our current work much easier. We will be able to manage your own home or business without help,by reading contracts and forms that wemay need to fill in, as well.

Learning to read and write at any age takes times and patience, but every bit of effort is worth it. Let’s do some practice every day, however little it might be, and remember how much we will get out of it. Slow and steady wins the race, so keep going, even when it feels hard, until we have have reached our goal!
