Why Heritage & Identity are Important for the Community

WHAT IS HERITAGE?
Heritage is many things. It can be buildings, mosques, temples or pyramids. It can be objects, clothes, books, manuscripts with stories and information from the past. It can be things we cannot touch or hold but things that we see or hear. Such as music and stories that have passed down from parent to child for many hundreds of years.
All of these things can be heritage. Heritage is associated with history and the past. Heritage is often things that have been made long ago, music or objects that have been passed down in families or important documents held in museums and libraries.
WHY IS HERITAGE IMPORTANT?
Learning about heritage opens doors to the past. By learning about the past, we can learn about ourselves – where we come from and who we are. Heritage helps us understand identity both collectively and individually, both regionally and globally.
WHAT IS IDENTITY?
Identity is how we think about ourselves both as individuals and as a community. It is both ‘who am I?’ and ‘who are we?’
THE VALUE OF HERITAGE
Heritage can be part of what helps us understand the questions ‘who am I?’ and ‘who are we?’
Heritage can give us a sense of history, and a sense of pride.
We can be proud of knowing the achievements of ancestors, achievements might be mathematical and scientific knowledge written in books, they can be musical achievements, achievements of skilled craftsmen and women or achievements or builders and artists. By learning about heritage, we can learn about the achievements of whole towns and cities where people crafted, prayed, traded and lived long ago.
