What To Do if You or Your Child have a Fever

Fever is an increase in a core body temperature. It is a normal response to an illness, and it even plays a defensive role against an infection. An instrument that is used to measure a temperature is called a thermometer. A normal body temperature is between 36-37 C. A body temperature above 38 is considered as a fever
IS A FEVER LIFE THREATENING?
There usually is no danger from a relatively high fever, but it can cause a lot of discomfort. Symptoms include feeling cold, body stiffness, fatigue, headache, shivering, and an increased heart rate. Fever generally resolves after approximately 3 days, however if it lasts any longer you may want to go to a doctor for check-up. For children, it can lead to serious complications such as dehydration and seizures; therefore it should be closely monitored and a doctor should be contacted.
DRINKING LOTS OF WATER IS IMPORTANT
Drinking a lot of water can prevent dehydration. For adults, it is also necessary to stay hydrated by drinking more water. Furthermore, staying at the house in order to get a lot of rest and sleep will be beneficial. Do not stay at a direct sunlight, instead rest in a cool spot with some shade. Dress in light clothes, and keep your armpits open to the air, because it will help a body to cool down.

WHAT CAN BE DONE AGAINST A FEVER?
Medications against fever are called antipyretics, and common examples include ibuprofen and paracetamol. It is important to remember that you should take only one medication at the time, because mixing medications together will not be any more effective. Once the medications begin to work and the body’s temperature falls back down to normal- shivering and sweating will occur. Therefore, preparing a blanket and staying warm will decrease the discomfort.
